The Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI) Translational Research Facility at the University of Utah Research Park aims to address the epidemic levels of mental illness in the United States through increased mental health support in Utah and beyond. The unique design, inspired by the intersection of neuroscience, architecture, and the surrounding environment, breaks away from the typical research building aesthetic.
This world-class facility, built upon the history of the Utah Neurological Institute, will create a collaborative environment for experts to solve mental health challenges from brain disease to stigma and policy issues, drastically changing the way people view mental health. The lab will provide training to mental health educators, clinicians, and researchers. Additionally, this facility will be monitored and improved over time to continually adapt to improvements in treatment. It will serve as a living lab to inspire new rural and urban mental healthcare facilities across the country. The design process encouraged innovation and creativity through its engagement with a wide range of stakeholders, including an ongoing project advisory committee that provided feedback at all stages of design.
Every aspect of programming and design of the facility has been centered around increasing opportunities for collaboration. Functional areas of the building are arranged around a central collaboration 'zone'. A primary wayfinding and circulation spine is flanked by conferencing spaces and informal respite areas. One must pass through this collaborative zone in order to access individual spaces. Within the collaboration zone, a series of smaller, simpler floor openings and stairways compose an atrium, providing strong visual and physical connections between floors.
By fostering collaboration among experts, providing training for mental health professionals, and serving as a model for future facilities, this facility aims to not only improve mental health outcomes in Utah but also to make a lasting impact on the nation's approach to mental health care.
